This project was designed to widen the existing road which showed serious signs of settlement on the bridge approaches due to heavy vehicular traffic. The design took into account the existing road widths and the existing capacity of the existing bridge abutments and wing walls.
The designers decided to dig down on the approaches behind the existing wing wall where a gabion wall was constructed to create a wider retaining area to the sides of the approaches. The gabions were installed and stitched together and benched into the existing embankment. Once this was completed we proceeded to excavate along the length of the approaches where we widened the embankment to strengthen the road substructure to allow the road to be resurfaced and to allow the installation of road barrier on the approaches. The road barrier was installed as per the design containment lengths on the approaches and ne stock fencing was then constructed to the back of the barrier. The road was resurfaced and the line marking was completed.
